20 Modern Ways to Re-live the Roaring 20s
Growing up, the 1920s were a far-off glamorous period that we could only dream about (or watch Leonardo DiCaprio recreate). It was a time, culture, and way of life beyond our grasp. This new decade feels like we’re getting a second pass at a by-gone era. While we can’t ever bring the true roaring 20s back to life, we can emulate all the magic she gave to a prosperous post-WWI era.
“The parties were bigger, the pace was faster, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser, and the liquor was cheaper,” wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby.
Whether in the little details of your jewelry, a drastic change in your hairstyle, or a throwback cocktail at your next soiree, here are nearly two dozen ways you can inspire the 2020s with century-old style.
-
Add serious glam to the next wedding, gala, or awards banquet you attend with a beaded gown.
-
Imagine how posh you’d look in ripped jeans, old concert tee, and a pair of T-strap heels.
-
You’d also look quite smart in a pair of Mary Janes (some of you probably have a pair you can dust off from the 90s!).
-
Thanks to Coco Chanel, androgenous attire for women was a head-turning look that would steal the scene today. Try a blouse with a tie and, dare we suggest, trousers!
-
And if that’s not gender neutral enough for you, are you brave enough to bring back the golf knickers? (Our ancestors wouldn’t believe women are allowed at St. Andrews now!)
-
Bold, art deco and geometric designs were favored, too; a look the entire sock industry seems to have made all the rage.
-
Wear a wool cloche hat to your next brunch gathering. Was this the basic of the post-war era?
-
A bobbed haircut these days isn’t as outrageous as it was 100 years ago, when women were expected to wear long locks. We’ve perfected the curly, angled, and long bob to suit every head.
-
These bold fashion expressions were made more palatable with the popularity of pastel colors like dusty peach and mauve, and jade green.
-
The veil was even lifted off black clothing, no longer reserved for those in mourning.
-
Serve a batch of pancakes at breakfast. Seems sort of ordinary now, but a century ago it was quite novel. Serve with grapefruit and humanely-raised bacon to be a real “modern” foodie.
-
Treat yourself to a Baby Ruth candy bar, Hostess cupcake, or a frozen Popsicle the next time you’re grocery shopping and remember that the “junk food” we demonize today were welcome conveniences.
-
Book your next happy hour at a local speakeasy (if you can find one!). A lifeline for those snubbing prohibition, these hidden bars are quite trendy today.
-
Sip a gin rickey made of locally-sourced, handcrafted gin, instead of the “bathtub” variety made underground and distributed through back channels.
-
Raise a glass to everything with your favorite bottle of bubbles. You won’t have to sip champagne in secret like your great-great grandmother did.
-
Modernize your pineapple-upside down cake with a bourbon-soaked cherry in the middle of fresh-sliced pineapple rings.
-
Put a few contemporary twists on the standard Waldorf Salad. Food52 recommends toasting the walnuts, swapping in cherries for apples, mixing up different greens, and cutting the mayo for yogurt.
-
Plug in your AirPods to some “sticky jazz beats” for a very funky new workout playlist, like this one on Spotify.
-
Flappers were known for “flaunting their disdain at what was considered acceptable behavior.” Vote, speak up, be loud, and be yourself...nothing would make our 20th century sisterhood prouder.
- No need to wear a heavy floor-length wool dress to the gym, when the largest breasts are supported by an Enell sport bra and your choice of breathable, moisture-wicking fitness attire.
