      Candice Huffine and Project Start

      Candice Huffine and Project Start

We were thrilled when we were perusing Allure's website and read an article about model Candice Huffine and her running journey. Candice has long talked about body positivity and body positivity in fashion, and is a great encourager of runners of all skills and sizes through her initiative, Project Start. Color us even more surprised to see this:

"Running with breasts—there's a lot to contend with there to figure out what's going to work and keep things in place. I’ve tried a lot and I have to shout from the rooftops, Enell bras are made for bigger chested women. They’re a godsend. When you run as a curvy woman, there are things that are touching each other, skin-on-skin, and you can hurt yourself."

      Pardon us while we fangirl!

We appreciate Candice giving us a shout-out, and are so glad to hear the ENELL SPORT bra is helping her achieve her running goals. Next up for Candice is the Boston Marathon!

Oh, but first, she has to be on the cover of Vogue Mexico's Beauty Edition:

To learn more about Candice, her thoughts on body diversity and more about her running life, you can listen to this podcast from Ali on the Run. Follow Candice on Instagram at @candicehuffine.

Ground Yourself for a Daily Dose of Vitamin G

Ground Yourself for a Daily Dose of Vitamin G

If you think vitamin D is the only nutrient you can get from just being outside, guess again. Lie in the grass, squish your toes in the sand, let your hands dig into the dirt - that’s where you’ll find your daily dose of vitamin G. The “G” stands for ground and Buddhist yogi Alexis Irias writes that “emerging science reveals that direct contact with the ground allows you to receive an energy infusion.”

If you hadn’t already arrived at this on your own, listen up!

The emerging science she references, by Stephen Sinatra, MD and team in 2012, calls out that our contemporary lifestyle has removed us from the “primordial flow of Earth's electrons,” and in that disconnect has yielded many of the aches, pains, exhaustion, and general sense of unwellness that most Americans feel. Seems obvious when you think about it, right?

Our bodies are intrinsically, even electronically, connected to the Earth, given that our earliest ancestors interacted with its surface daily. But these days, some people don’t even get a daily breath of fresh air, much less a little “skin to skin” time with the yard.

Because we “rarely touch the source that creates every cell in our bodies,” that can have a not-so-surprising effect on our health, per Rodale Wellness. They report that some 90 percent of doctor’s visits are related to stress and inflammation…two things inextricably tied to most ailments.

The list of what’s not related to inflammation is shorter, but a snapshot includes asthma, arthritis, Crohn’s, diabetes, heart disease, migraines, obesity, and even dental health. It’s possible that getting in touch with the ground may have greater benefits and resolution than getting in touch with your pharmacist.

Sinatra, a renowned cardiologist and bestselling author, notes that the “Flow of electrons from the earth to the body has been documented." This “grounding” introduces negatively charged antioxidant electrons into the body which then neutralize positively charged free radicals in the body. Ultimately, this reduces inflammation.

Participants in the study recorded better sleep, reduced pain, and reduced cortisol levels as a result of grounding exercises and sleep methods.

Grounding, or earthing, restores our direct physical contact with the Earth -- think walking barefoot, sitting in the grass, working or sleeping on the ground, gardening. There are even ways to sleep indoors that connect you to conductive systems that transfer the Earth's electrons into the body. Although a night under the stars could achieve the same.

“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt,” says poet Margaret Atwood. We find it hard to argue with that.

      Lay Back, Relax, and Float

      Lay Back, Relax, and Float

Many have decided to take a dip in the Epsom salt-filled water chambers that poured into spas and gyms over the past decade. These chambers, known as float tanks, promise both mental and physical health benefits. Since 2011, 149 centers with float tanks have opened, and hundreds more will open in the next couple of years.

Netflix’s 2016 hit, Stranger Things, featured a makeshift version of a float tank used for sensory deprivation, and it’s what makes float tanks such a useful tool. Similarly to exercise, time in a float tank helps your body release endorphins that provide euphoria and fight stress. As stress fades away, many experience intense muscle relaxation, explaining why athletes like Stephen Curry flock to the tanks. Researchers have also been finding that the tanks’ calming environment can help those suffering from autism, depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

“Flotation is getting adopted because our world is becoming an increasingly stressful place,” said Graham Talley, co-founder of Float On, a float tank company.

“The tanks force people to slow down and pause rather than pushing faster and faster,” Talley said. “After people float, we hear them say all the time, ‘I can’t remember the last time I felt this relaxed.’”

In addition to sensory deprivation benefits, the Epsom salt holds advantages by delivering magnesium to the body. About 68% of Americans don’t get the recommended daily magnesium intake, putting them at risk for heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure. Absorbing magnesium through Epsom Salt in float tanks helps people meet their intake and helps reduce inflammation throughout their bodies.

For first-timers trying the float tank, be prepared to enter a chamber filled with about a foot of water. The 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt enable you to float effortlessly on the water’s surface while lying on your back. The water will be body temperature to contribute to the sensory deprivation.

If you want the full experience, shut the door, turn off the lights, and stay in for 60 to 90 minutes, allowing yourself to enter a meditative state. Some participants have had hallucinations while letting their thoughts wander.

Everyone’s floating experiences are unique, and even if you don’t want to go full sensory-deprivation, it’s not a bad idea to take an hour and a half alone with your thoughts.

Spring Clean Your Gym Bag with This Simple Checklist

Spring Clean Your Gym Bag with This Simple Checklist

Spring is just itching to come out and play, which means our most active days are right around the corner. Are you ready? Only about 40 percent of Americans have a regular exercise regimen, and that number falls by half through the fall and winter. The new year boom at the gym is well-known, but expect your favorite trail to start flooding with the fair-weather crowd as soon as the weather breaks.

      spring clean

The warm weather boom will not only send you back to the trail and cleaning out closets, but you need to add your gym bag to the list, too! Whether you took the season off or not, it’s high time you peeked inside that funk bag and did a little spring cleaning. A good wash and swapping the old for new will set you up with better gear. You’ll feel better, workout stronger, and probably smell better, too.

Here’s a simple checklist to help you get started.

      • The Bag. Depending on the material, and the age, the bag itself is probably due for a cleaning. Wash it, dry clean it, or just toss it.
      • The Shoes. Your kicks are only good for 300-500 miles, depending on just how much wear and tear their endure. Start the season in a professionally-fitted new pair of running or gym shoes (and yes, there is a difference).
      • The Socks. Check the toes and heels and if the material is thinning or has holes, just toss ’em in the trash. Replace with socks suited to your workout, like a moisture wicking material for runners or something with more grip for yogis.
      • The Bra. Like shoes, your bra will only last so many miles. Most sports bras should be replaced every six to 12 months, but an Enell can last up to two years if you care for it, and some customers have reported five years! Learn more about caring for your Enell.
      • The Deodorizer. If you keep dryer sheets, baking soda, or other odor absorbing supplies in your bag, be sure to swap that out. Moso Natural Air Deodorizing bags remove odor, bacteria, allergens, and more and last two years.
      • The Yoga Mat. That thing is super porous, which means it harbors a lot of germs and bacteria. Clean it after each session with hot water and soap. It’s time to replace the mat if it’s thinning in well-worn areas, smells bad, has any size holes, doesn’t roll/unroll properly, or the edges curl.

This Notorious RBG Workout Takes Only 12 Minutes

This Notorious RBG Workout Takes Only 12 Minutes

he most pint-sized yet fiercest Supreme Court justice on the bench happens to be an 83-year-old woman who works out daily. The New York Times recently reported that Ruth Bader Ginsburg owned up to a completely doable workout that keeps her in dissenting shape.

Each morning she completes 20 push-ups and 30 seconds of planks.

“I do 10, and then I breathe, and then I do 10 more,” she said.

No wonder she doesn’t feel like retiring, and includes things like whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and water skiing as favorite leisure activities.

She’s also known to be a proponent of the Royal Canadian Air Force workout, which debuted in 1961. It was originally developed for men, of course, to help their pilots get in flying shape. That plan was called 5BX (Five Basic Exercises).

Then a corresponding plan, called XBX (Ten Basic Exercises), was developed for women. Who’s surprised women got assigned twice as much work?

Regardless of gender, the idea is that the workout quickly and efficiently works out major muscle groups in a short period of time. Liken it to today’s wildly popular HIIT and interval training workouts. The Canadian workout that Ginsburg likes includes a combination of knee raises, arm circles, push-ups, sit-ups, chest raises, leg raises, running, and hopping.

The workout doesn’t require any equipment, just enough space to complete the motions. Dame Helen Mirren is a vocal fan of the regimen as well, and notes that it only takes her about 12 minutes to complete.

Notorious RBG may not need an Enell, but plenty of revolutionaries like her will want to strap into our Sport Bra before any hopping ensues!

      The Benefits of Loving Yourself

      The Benefits of Loving Yourself

We’re taught from a young age to love everyone around us. We always talk about it in terms of kindness toward others, though. The reality is that it’s just as important, and maybe even more so, that we extend that kindness unto ourselves.

It’s all too easy to be our own worst enemy. Even with ourselves the bad news gets better ratings! Think of all the ways you doubt, sabotage, and contradict yourself in a day. That’s no way to treat your best friend. We should strive to be our own best friend.

“Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Self-love is dynamic,” says Deborah Khoshaba Psy.D. at Psychology Today.

When we truly love ourselves, we can better prioritize our own needs and even communicate them to others. We can achieve more independence and less reliance. We’re more apt to set boundaries for ourselves — minded personally and by others. We’re more likely to abandon destructive behaviors that self-sabotage and, instead, develop behaviors that lift us up. We discover more mental and physical energy when we don’t waste our time ignoring the messages our body is sending.

Headaches, sleeplessness, exhaustion, achy muscles, cranky mood, and a heap of other symptoms you may very well be experiencing right now are all ways in which the body cries out for help. It can only endure so much.

Ever argue with a boyfriend or spouse that while their material gifts certainly make you feel appreciated, you feel their love and know it’s real through their actions, words, time, and attention? Your self needs the same.

You can certainly treat yourself with pedicures, flowers, and shopping, but those actions don’t directly contribute to bolstering your self-love.

You can become more mindful - heightening that awareness of self.

You can take care of yourself by letting your body move (call it exercise if you like), eating well, and sleeping well.

You can forgive yourself. Think of the energy you spend punishing yourself for things that are trite or inconsequential, and what that energy could look like when used for good. Recognize your humanness, embrace that it comes with imperfections, and learn from those moments as opposed to letting them lord over you.

And don’t start beating yourself up if you can’t feel the love for yourself a few days from now. If this is especially new to you, like most things it will take time. Give yourself over to one small action. For example, improve your sleep habits before you take on the next action.

At the very least, find some small way to love yourself every single day. Look in the mirror and tell yourself, “You is kind, you is smart, you is important.” And believe it.

      New Year, New Plates

      New Year, New Plates

With traditional restaurants in financial turmoil over falling grocery prices and the increase of delivery food startups, 2017 promises big changes at multiple levels of food consumption and production.

Wholesale prices of meat, chicken, eggs, and other popular grocery store items nosedived from 2015 to 2016, and they’re unlikely to go anywhere but down in 2017. This will further shift consumers towards preparing meals at home, where they can now conveniently order their ingredients online or pick them up from the store for significantly cheaper prices.

Upcoming trends for 2017 reflect this change, yet also continue to reveal peculiarities in our appetites.

      • Mindful comfort food. Veganism and vegetarianism continue to evolve, and are no longer resigned to ordering salads when they go out. A slew of comfort food restaurants have opened to answer the call of delicious yet conscientious food in these communities. Look for foods like cashew mac and cheese, squash alternatives to pasta, and veggie-based crusts for pizza.
      • Flexitarianism. Along with a new era of vegetarianism comes a new approach to the practice. Flexitarians create their own schedule of meat consumption, allowing themselves to indulge as often as weekends or as little as five days of the year.
      • The call of the carnivore. Meat-eaters will find their own renaissance in 2017-- embracing classic butcher shops, new sources of protein, and more aggressive cooking methods. Get ready for charred, smoky venison as opposed to the typical, rare beef steak.
      • Robust breakfast. The widespread acceptance of brunch has slowly edged out the soft, sweet breakfasts of the past. 2017’s morning plates will be packed with high-protein and rough textures. Think fried chicken surrounded by crispy chorizo.
      • Gourmet ice cream. Decadent shakes and ice cream rollups populate 2017’s dessert scene. Crammed with candy and every topping imaginable, next year’s cones will be piled high. Additionally, ice cream rollups made of extremely thin layers of liquid ice cream rolled into cylinders will be a sought-after aesthetic.
