Let’s Pump Up Your Protein Game

Let’s Pump Up Your Protein Game

What are you eating before and after your workouts? If you’re sick or sluggish during the workout, then it wasn’t the right pre-sweat snack. And if you’re exhausted or slow to recover after a workout, you’re definitely not re-fueling properly.

      This matters, so listen up.

First of all, the pre- and post-workout snacks are different beasts fueling very different ends of the workout spectrum. Treat them differently.

The pre-workout snack has two very important jobs: to give you adequate energy from the moment your workout starts and to jump start your body’s recovery efforts so you feel really good tomorrow. This snack should be simple and something your body can digest quickly. It should not be a big meal, you’ll be too full/bloated/gassy, nor should it be a fast-burning carb, like sugar, or you’ll fade out in the middle of the workout.

About 1-2 hours before you hit the gym, track, or studio, pre-game with one of these optimally-paired fast protein/moderate carb snacks:

      • Protein bar that’s low sugar, low fat
      • 8 oz. skim milk with a banana
      • Non-fat Greek yogurt
      • Smoothie with whey protein and fresh berries
      • String cheese and a small apple
      • Slice of turkey with a few low-fiber crackers
      • Egg whites and white rice

The post-workout snack should also not be missed, and should be consumed as close to the end of your workout as you can manage. This is all about recovery, which is why lean protein (and a little bit of sugar) is the name of the game. The protein restores all that spent energy so you aren’t dragging the rest of the day, but it also repairs the muscles you just beat up.

This is where you start to build muscle and develop that toned look...rip the muscle while lifting, repair with protein, rip, repair, rinse repeat!

      • Chocolate milk
      • Whey protein added to your favorite sport drink
      • Turkey, cheese, apples
      • Non-fat Greek yogurt
      • Peanut butter on whole grain crackers
      • Cottage cheese with berries
      • Add avocado to scrambled eggs or in a smoothie

5 Most Popular Workouts You’ve Gotta Try in 2018

5 Most Popular Workouts You’ve Gotta Try in 2018

If we’re supposed to learn from our past to improve our future, then perhaps your resolution needs little more help than what was cool just a few weeks ago! The year in review and year ahead trend spotters have been hard at work, giving us plenty of fodder to plot our way into 2018.

If you’re looking at your goals and trying to make those jive with your tired old fitness routine, take a look at the hottest workouts from last year. According to Google, these were the five most-searched workouts in 2017. The results reveal some exciting ideas that will refresh your own moves and attitude about exercise.

      popular workouts for 2018

      1. Murph Crossfit Workout

This intense WOD first debuted in 2005 to honor Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who died in Afghanistan. It was his favorite Crossfit workout, including a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and a 1 mile run...and they recommend doing it in a 20-pound vest! A scholarship program in his name hosts a fundraiser fitness challenge each Memorial Day, called The Murph Challenge.

      1. Bungee Workout

Cardio, dance, and aerobics meet resistance training in this inspired new group fitness class with roots in Thailand. Strap into a bungee harness affixed to the ceiling and let yourself fly...and sweat! This low-impact, high-resistance class also improves balance, works your core, and provides a fun but intense total body workout. Check out the class at Crunch in NYC!

      1. Tabata Workout

This high-efficiency style of interval training is nothing new, but continues to gain popularity as people embrace the “more bang for your buck” HIIT fitness philosophy. You can ultimately get a real calorie-torching, total body workout in about half an hour. Tabata was born out of research at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, where they found more intense workouts in shorter bursts showed gains in both cardio and muscular development. Perform your move (burpees, push-ups, squats, etc.) for 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, then repeat up to 8 sets in 4 minutes. Then repeat with a new move up to 30 minutes.

      1. TRX Workout

Resistance and strength training that utilizes your own body weight… and you never have to set foot in the gym! This is why TRX continues to be so popular after more than 10 years. It’s definitely not a fad! The bungee-like suspension bands affix to a sturdy door frame, or the like, for a total body workout that will help you reach your toning and strength goals. Hook it up at home, take it to a park, or even pack it in your suitcase so you don’t skip a workout at the hotel! They even provide workout and trainer guidance.

      1. Burpee Exercises

You know you love to hate ‘em, but man are they effective! Also known as a squat thrust, the burpee is a total body strength move with an added aerobic benefit. With every squat and jump combo, you’ll feel your heart rate rise and the muscles engage across your arms, chest, quads, glutes, hamstrings, legs, and abs. Follow the Tabata approach for a basic set of burpees, something you can totally do in 4 minutes every day. Or if you’re really committed, try the 100 Burpee Challenge. It’s like a C25K for burpees, with 8 burpees on day one leading up to 100 on day 27!

7 Bra Faux Pas You Never Have to Endure Again

7 Bra Faux Pas You Never Have to Endure Again

You know when you’re headed to your in-laws over the holidays and there’s nothing you can really do about it except maybe hide a flask in your luggage and make the best of it? That’s kind of what it’s like living in bras. There’s nothing we can do about it, we’re going to be wearing these things until we die, so at least in the meantime we can make the best of this particular situation.

That starts with loving ourselves, and that means not punishing ourselves with ill-fitted bras or abusing their purpose in public. Bras should enhance and support one of the most curvaceous, empowering parts of our bodies. Use them wisely!

Here are seven deadly bra sins you’ve gotta put an end to, like yesterday!

Boob Purses. Let’s cut right to the chase here… your bra is not a purse, or a wallet, or a pocket. Wear a fanny pack if you must, but you gotta stop putting your phone, ID, cash, and keys down there. We can’t have you confusing nipples for nickels! Have you ever been a cashier on the receiving end of a bra purse situation? It’s nothing you ever want to have to repeat.

      via GIPHY

Double Down. This is less a public courtesy and more just general kindness to yourself, but stop putting yourself through the double-down two-bra nightmare. Trust us when we say - we’ve been there! That’s how Enell was born. If you’ve got to wear two bras or a sport bra over your bra or any other combo, it’s time to get fitted for the right bra.

Black Eye Boobs. We’ve all either been this woman or seen this woman and cringe each and every time. It’s painful to watch the boobs bounce and toss and lumber around under a shirt where it’s clear there’s little to no support. Get those puppies cinched up and strapped down properly so you don’t injure yourself. (Seriously, all that jostling can tear and damage the tissue in your breasts.)

Miss the Point. It’s fun to compare our breasts to majestic mountain peaks, but they shouldn’t resemble the rocky top. The points went the way of Madonna’s chart toppers and Dolly’s last hit, and we’re insistent on never seeing that particular come-back tour.

Ms. Fit’s Misfit. You know that feeling when the outfit kills? Everything is on point. You can strut out of your room feeling like you’ve got VIP seats at a Beyonce video shoot. That is, unless your bra doesn’t fit. Doing that shifty-shoulder thing, tucking and retucking, wiggling around like you’ve got ants in your pants...it will bring the hottest look to its knees. Girls, get fitted and you will transform your attitude, posture, and look!

Strap Slap Fever. They slip, you put ‘em back. They slide, you replace. And so it goes on and on in every meeting, dinner, grocery line, and chore you do all day long. Stop the insanity, go ahead and trash that bra, and get some straps that are going to stick! You don’t need that kind of stress in your life.

Black Bra Peek-A-Boo. Oh little black bra or hot pink daisy patterned bra… we see you, ever-so subtly, under that crisp white T-shirt and blouse. Even your dirtiest nude bra is better than this particular no-efs-to-give look.

Avoid these seven bra faux pas!

9 Recipes to Bring Cauliflower Home for the Holidays

9 Recipes to Bring Cauliflower Home for the Holidays

Ahhhh the holidays! That tradition-fueled time of year chock full of hot cocoa, snowflakes, gift wrap, merry songs, cookies, and cauliflower. Wait, what?

The vegetable has wildly increased in popularity during the past five years, when foodies and conscious eaters alike started swapping out potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, and other carbs for the versatile plant. And because of the promotion of more and more keto success stories, cauliflower’s popularity isn’t going dormant anytime soon.

With holiday tables typically filled to the brim with every delicious carb and starch imaginable, it stands to reason that cauliflower, a member of the same family as broccoli, brussels, cabbage, and kale, will stand in for the usual stuffing, yams, and pastas.

A full medium head of cauliflower has only 146 calories, half of your daily need of potassium, and a whopping 12 grams of fiber and 11 grams of protein! You probably don’t need to eat an entire head of cauliflower at once, but the point is, it’s a lean, mean carb-fighting machine that weighs in pretty worry-free when you’ve got a hankering for mac, waffles, or stuffing.

Why has cauliflower become such a versatile and popular ingredient? The neutral flavor and starch level is really beneficial to replacing all of the carby deliciousness, explained Marisa, recipe developer at UprootKitchen.com. When you steam or sautee and blend, you achieve the same creaminess.

She made a few recommendations for those trying to up their cauliflower game, or get started:

      • The pureed cauliflower can substitute for half & half.
      • Add olive oil or butter if the cauliflower lacks the mouthfeel you would have gotten from, say, mashed potatoes.
      • Don’t be afraid to add fat! Especially if you’re already substituting to reduce carbs but want to feel just as filled and satisfied.
      • The neutral flavor/taste makes it easy to dress up anyway you like. Try adding fresh herbs or roasted garlic.

Bike to Work for a More Efficient Commute

Bike to Work for a More Efficient Commute

With the average American commute time increasing to 26 minutes one-way, it’s no wonder that people are looking for ways to diversify their drive to work. Sure, you can pop in podcasts and your favorite playlists for entertainment, but if you already sit at your job all day, more sitting isn’t the best way to start and end the day.

Biking has skyrocketed in popularity as a commute tool—increasing by 46% annually on average in the U.S. Why biking? We’re glad you asked.

Efficiency. Cycling is the single most efficient method of travel; more so than walking! This is based on the amount of energy expended by the rider during a trip compared with other modes like driving, walking, etc.

Carbon Footprint. Energy-wise, bikes beat out every mode of transportation. Cars eat up hundreds of dollars of gas and oil per month. This is without even factoring in the issue of fossil fuels.

Biking can even be up to five times more efficient than walking.

Productivity. Instead of squeezing in a workout before work or after you arrive home, use that commute time to get fit. Biking your commute is a great way to burn 300 calories without taking much away from your personal time.

Bike shares. You can get good, inexpensive bikes, but if you’re still not ready to commit, bike shares have you covered. Most bike shares have single ride trips for about $3, day passes for about $10, and varying rates on monthly and annual passes. Opting for an annual pass could cost nearly as much as a cheap bike, but it’ll be higher quality and you’ll never worry about repairs.

Accessibility. Cities are seeing the good that cycling brings and increasing bike lanes, making more bike-friendly laws, and innovating with things like bike rooms to meet bikers’ needs. A list of the U.S.’s most bike friendly cities reveals that this change isn’t just happening in one area. The top five on the list—Philadelphia, Tuscon, Austin, Denver, and Portland—span the country.

5 Facts that Break the Illusion of Photoshop

5 Facts that Break the Illusion of Photoshop

Photo editing may be one of the most common and pervasive tools in modern media. You can’t scroll far through your Insta feed without running into pictures that have been filtered and processed in apps for contouring, body shaping, and other manipulations.

It’d be easy to shrug your shoulders at something that seems interwoven with fashion, consumerism, and overall western 21st century culture. However, understanding a bit of what happens beyond the lense can keep the weight of unrealistic expectations at bay while humanizing models.

BuzzFeed’s infamous Try Guys hopped behind the camera to expose their skin and some Photoshop truths while recreating classic Photoshop disaster pics. Here are a few takeaways to keep you grounded instead of grading your own worth and beauty by these farce images.

Everything has been photoshopped. “Like, all of it. Unless an ad specifically says ‘This has not been photoshopped,’ I can guarantee it has been photoshopped,” said BuzzFeed Lifestyle Editor Chrissy Mahlmeister. If everything’s been photoshopped, then it’s hard not to compare your raw selfies to the mountains of carefully crafted content out there.

Unrealistic standards have been around for a while. Photoshop definitely carries its fair share of blame when it comes to harmful beauty standards, but the idea of telling women how to look predates the digital era. Just a few decades ago, men were literally drawing their idealized versions of women for advertisements rather than photoshopping them. Through the years, different body types have trended as well, meaning that no timeless, objective rule of beauty exists.

Not all the work happens post-production. Some of the Try Guys were shocked at the 45 minutes they had to spend with just the makeup team before the photoshoot. This, combined with lighting setups, professional equipment, highly-trained photographers, and meticulously planned poses, all come before the photoshopping even begins.

It’s their job. It’s incredibly unfair to hold your body to the same standard of people who make careers out of working on their bodies. Like athletes, it’s a model’s job to be in exceptional physical condition. Often this means they’ve got the resources for personal trainers, chefs, and the time groom beyond your average Tuesday out-the-door routine. They’re also used to criticism, something you shouldn’t have to fear if you didn’t get the right angle on a social media picture.

Even celebrities are weirded out by it. Mahlmeister pointed out that even celebrities she’s been around see their photoshopped pictures and wished they looked like that. “The most shocking part might be after you see the Photoshop version of yourself, you basically have seen what someone wished that you look like,” Mahlmeister said. “It’s so hard to not let that affect you.”

8 More DIY Halloween Costumes using a Sports Bra

8 More DIY Halloween Costumes using a Sports Bra

A while back, we shared 12 ideas for halloween costumes that you could DIY using your sports bra. Just in time for Halloween, we're bringing you 7 more, plus an update on 1 from last time.

GLOW - Flex your 80’s muscle as one of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling!  Enell sport bras are the perfect fit for these high-shine costumes. Pair the Purple Orchid with an equally bold pair of high-waisted briefs or swim bottoms, or go for the layered look with Biscay Green or Rock It Red under a leotard. Then spray and tease your hair as big as it gets and tap into the eyeshadow colors you rarely dare to use.

OITNB - Sometimes the ladies let down their guard in some real basic skivvies and the Enell classic white sport bra is the perfect accessory to pull off this minimal prison look. Try it like Maritza and Flaca and go all-in on a fabulous makeup job. Pay homage to Poussey by pairing a black Enell with a Polynesian necklace. Flirt like Daya and finish the costume with simple black flip flops. Fill out the bottom in khaki scrubs pants. Or style it out like Black Cindy with full pom-pom pigtails. Use this template to make your own Litchfield ID badge

Wonder Woman - The red and gold brassiere is a focal point of Wonder Woman’s ensemble and it’s never been more popular than when Gal Gadot donned it this summer. Pull together this look with the Rock It Red Enell sport bra. Use paint or stickers to add gold embellishments. No one’s going to question this super lady’s decision!

Moana - An orange sport bra could be the finishing touch for this adventurous Polynesian look. Especially for a quick and easy costume on a budget with pieces you can use again, it’s as simple as pairing with a flowing white skirt, a big necklace, and a fierce attitude.

Mario & Luigi - You can one-up the competition at this year’s costume party with a very girly take on the famous Italian plumbers. You and a friend will need Enell Rock It Red and Biscay Green sport bras to start this flirty look, then pair with denim shorts, suspenders, white sneakers, and some stick-on mustaches.

Minions - It doesn’t get much simpler than yellow sport bras, overalls, and yellow ball caps to get you and your crew ready for a super simple Halloween that’s one in a minion!

Taylor Swift - Plan to stay out too late in this white, gold, and blue cheer ensemble that throws it back to 2014. A few embellishments will turn a classic white Enell sport bra into Taylor’s cheer top that easily matches up with a thrift store skirt and white sneaks. It’s gonna be alright when you rock a perfect pony and bold red lippy.

Princess Jasmine - A Biscay Green Enell could add just the shimmer you need under this sheer and flowy Moroccan costume. You’ll be supported no matter how many tricks or treats your future prince throws at you that night.

      How to Feel Truly Rested

      How to Feel Truly Rested

“More sleep” seems to be the go-to prescription for whatever’s ailing you. Stressed? Go to bed earlier. Trying to lose weight? Make sure you’re getting your eight hours. Stomach problems? Sleep is always good for that.

It’s no surprise that sleep is a top recommendation considering more than a third of adults in America aren’t getting enough of it. With REM sleep being essential for learning and increasing some protein production, sleep rightfully takes center stage. However, this leads to people assuming that sleep and rest are the same thing. If you sacrifice your Netflix time to get a full night’s sleep, then you’ve done your due diligence, right? Your mind would argue otherwise.

If every waking moment of your life outside of your time in dreamland is crammed with things to do, frantic thoughts, and constant interaction, then you’re not getting the rest you need. There may be something weirdly satisfying about a full planner, but it doesn’t lead to a fulfilling lifestyle. You need some time that isn’t about placating some checklist or worrying about the future.

Throughout the day, stop and think about whether you’ve had a moment to yourself. If you have, great job, don’t stop there! If you haven’t, treat yourself to a mind-break with one of the following activities.

Shavasana yoga. Yoga may be a workout for some, but people sometimes overlook its restful potential. Also known as the corpse pose, in Shavasana, you lie on your back, arms at your sides, and relax. It may sound silly, but it’s been shown to help with depression, high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia.

Spend time outside. The average American only spends about 7% of their life outdoors. Next time you get the chance, walk somewhere. It could be from your house to work, the store, or just around the block. People think differently outdoors, and it provides a kind of rest that many miss out on.

Find a dark, quiet place. But most importantly, find a place you can be alone. Even if you’re the most extroverted person in the world, you still need quiet moments to yourself. Use these to rest and get to know yourself a little better. Think about the present, about questions to ask yourself, or simply enjoy precious time spent in solitude.

Make a list of reasons why you’re thankful. Some people are just list people, no matter what. If you can’t find rest by being still or keeping your mind still, then focus your thoughts with a list. It shouldn’t be a list focused on pressure, deadlines, or regrets. Center it on positive things like the people in your life who make your happy, your favorite sensations, or general celebrations about life.

      HOPE Pink and Giving Back

Every year, ENELL donates 10% of proceeds from the HOPE Pink versions of our ENELL SPORT and ENELL LITE bras to a charity related to breast cancer and women's health. The proceeds donated are from the entire year of sales of those products, but with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to spotlight where the current years funds are going.

ENELL is proud to sponsor the Kalispell Regional Medical Center’s Mobile Mammography Coach.

      About the coach:

"Kalispell Regional Medical Center’s Mobile Mammography Coach reaches women who are unable to come to the on-site imaging center. The mobile unit is helping eliminate barriers by making it faster and more convenient for women in rural Montana to have a screening mammogram, the key to lifesaving early detection of breast cancer. Yearly mammograms are covered by Medicare and most insurance companies."

More information about the Coach can be found here.
